Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack targeting an underground arms cache in Syrian territory operated by the IS group, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in hills just to the north of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to target a several entry passages down to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in Iraq and Syria before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to operate in unison with allied nations, to eliminate any re-emergence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister remarked.

British military aircraft have carried out patrols over Syrian airspace to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of the group following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of British forces participating in this operation for their expertise and their courage," he commented. "They were part of numerous UK service members stationed over the festive period. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our safety, shows how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the US military conducted what it called a "massive strike" on Islamic State objectives in the country, following an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
