The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and disinformation, an EU official has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Intimidation’
European leaders such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on individuals that were at the heart of efforts to introduce legislation governing American tech companies.
“For too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote a senior US official online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

This European legislation is seen by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities contend the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
