Elevated Waist Measurement Ratio Increases Heart Disease Risk

The study tracked 2,721 adults in São Paulo, Brazil to analyze how body measurements predicted cardiovascular risk in comparison to BMI.

Research volunteers were about 48 years old on average, and nearly two-thirds were female. The sample was racially diverse, but mostly of European descent (57%), and featured people representing mixed race, Black heritage, and Eastern origins.

For participation in the research, volunteers required no coronary artery calcium (CAC) deposits, as established via a cardiovascular examination. Coronary artery calcium represents a predictive marker for heart disease, with increased measurements indicating a greater risk level.

After a five-year follow-up, scientists reassessed coronary calcium. Approximately 15% of subjects showed indications of CAC buildup, and it was found to be more common among those with bigger waistlines.

Although all three measures — weight-height ratio, waist measurement, and waist-stature proportion — were connected with cardiac concerns in an unadjusted analysis, exclusively the waist-stature measurement continued as a standalone indicator after factoring in established health indicators, such as high blood pressure, increased cholesterol, and diabetes.
